Weekly Toolbox Links - Variety Edition

As promised I am back this week with my weekly toolbox links where I share various links to tools, websites, code, news, and more. In recent weeks I have focused on one particular theme, however I have a few tools, a few code samples, and a few developer links this week. Enjoy!

As always, feel free to submit toolbox suggestions to ddouglass@gmail.com.

Silverlight 2.0 (beta 1) Controls Screenshot

SilverlightShow has a nice post up detailing the controls that will be available in the Silverlight 2.0 beta 1 release.  The news was originally posted on Shawn Burke's blog, but it appears that the he was forced to take down the screen shot.  Thanks to SilverlightShow that graphic is still visible and is also now posted on my blog.  Exciting stuff!

In case you missed the announcement from ScottGu about the Silverlight 2.0 beta 1 release, you can read all about it here.  I'm really looking forward to playing around with this beta! [Screenshot in full post]

Weekly Toolbox Links - Best Online RSS Readers

Its that time of the week again to provide you with the new links added to my toolbox. This week I will be focusing on the best web-based RSS readers. You can see in the far right sidebar that I provide "my rss feeds" that I read daily, if not more frequently. If you have not used an RSS reader before, I highly recommend that you give one of the following a shot. My favorite is easily Google Reader, which you can get a sneak peak in the screenshot in the full blog post. Do you think I missed a quality online RSS reader? Feel free to share and I'll try it out, and maybe even add it to the list!

Firefox 3 Beta 3 Is Now Available

I have been experimenting with Firefox 3 Beta 2 for a month or so now and can honestly say that I'm very pleased. I was a diehard Firefox fan for quite a while until IE 7 was released and I realized just how significant the memory leaks were in Firefox 2. I gave Opera 9.25 and Opera 9.5 Beta a chance after using IE 7 for a while, but I was not all that impressed. Then I read the news about the Firefox 3 Beta 2 release, and I have never looked back.

What is your favorite browser??

I know I said last week I was not going to post this week's links until Wednesday, but since I have already put together the list I might as well share! This week I'll be focusing on Windows Tools that help make our lives as developers easier. I have personally use (or have used) all of these tools and I stand by my recommendations!

Do you have any utilities to add to the list??

Silverlight Media Applications - Slide.Show, Video.Show

In my previous post I announced an extension for BlogEngine.NET that utilized a rich Silverlight application called Slide.Show built by Vertigo.  It was one of three products in their ".Show" line - the other two being Video.Show and Family.Show.  I'm only going to discuss the first two as I plan to focus on the media sharing applications offered by Vertigo.  Both applications are open source (available for download on CodePlex) and are cross broswer compatible (IE 6 and 7, Firefox 2, and Safari 3).

  • Slide.Show - Slide.Show shows off some of the latest Silverlight technologies while also providing an elegant and simple photo sharing user experience.
  • Video.Show - Show provides Silverlight 1.0 video controls, Silverlight Streaming hosting integration, leveraging Expression Encoder's ability to handle most popular video formats. We’ve set things up so you can be uploading videos within minutes, and we’ve added in some cool features like time-based video comments, so your comments will be synchronized with the video playback.

YouTorrent an Immediate Hit

Three days ago I posted on the latest search engine for torrents, YouTorrent.com, and raved about how much I liked the service.  In fact, I believe the word I used was "awesome".  After just a few days of using the site to locate my *cough* legal *cough* torrents that ranged from software to movies I must say that I am rather pleased.  And apparently I am not the only one after seeing YouTorrent's blog post on the traffic they received in the first 3 days where they show that they reached an amazing 150,000 searches per day within 3 days of launching the service! How's that for gaining some immediate traction with a new web-based service?  And there's more...

YouTorrent Search Engine is Awesome

Instead of jumping between torrent sites trying to find the undoubtedly legal content you are searching for, you can now visit YouTorrent for all your torrent needs.  YouTorrent indexes torrents from several popular torrent sites (The Pirate Bay, BitTorrent, Monova, and many more) and returns results by organized by popularity (most seeded torrents).  Unfortunately TechCrunch has recently reported that this site could be shutdown in the near future.

Outlook - One Rule To Rule Them All

Outlook Toolbar Button Whether you use folders, categories, archives, search folders, or a combination of those options to keep your inbox organized one thing remains constant - Outlook rules make this task simpler. I use a handful of rules to automatically categorize and then move them once they have been categorized. Instead of running each rule individually, I have been using the rule below to trigger all enabled rules to execute at once.
